Monteverde hasn’t been around for long, but Monteverde ink is already known for being one of the smoothest and highest-quality ink you can buy for high-end fountain pens.

An Introduction to Monteverde

Monteverde was founded in 1999 in the United States, making it one of the youngest companies in the fountain pen space. While most well-known pen companies were established in the 1800s or early 1900s, a company with less than a quarter-century history might be easy to write off.

However, ignoring this company due to its young age would be a mistake – even with their short history Monteverde has become known for high-quality fountain pens and even higher-quality ink. Writing with a Monteverde fountain pen ink is a smooth experience and a ton of fun.

A key differentiator that puts Monteverde ahead of their older, more established competition, is their trademarked ink treatment formula, or ITF, technology. With ITF, inks have a better flow which gives them a sharper look on the page.

Improving ink flow has more benefits than just better looks, ITF technology allows the ink to lubricate the feeding system within the fountain pen. Better lubrication and flow extend the life of the fountain pen and help guard against clogs and hardening ink within the pen itself. Not only is hard ink difficult to clean, but it might also prematurely take your favorite fountain pen out of the rotation for good.

Lastly, ITF improves the dry time of the ink and allows for a longer cap-off period. Less interruption to your writing, and more life for your pen, win/win.

If you haven’t heard of Monteverde before, this guide will give you an introduction to some of their most popular fountain pen inks at a range of prices. By the end of our ink review, we think these quality Monteverde inks will become a regular feature of your fountain pen collection.

Best Monteverde Ink Review

1. Monteverde USA Ink

The original, the founder, the first – this ink got the business rolling for Monteverde. Available in an eye-popping 42 color variations, Monteverde USA Ink is the first touch point for the brand. Coming in a 90ml bottle, this high-quality ink is the leading ink formula for Monteverde.

Writing with this ink produces smooth and crisp lines without over-saturating the page and creating blotches. The colors pop but aren’t too vibrant, so the ink is a great choice for both writers and artists, though professional artists may want to opt for one of the more expensive inks that creates a more vibrant coloring.

This ink is water-based so it takes a little longer to dry but it soaks into the page well and is non-erasable. We like how the Monteverde USA Ink lubricates the inner workings of the fountain pen and sharply reduces the chance of any clogging or molding that would ruin an expensive fountain pen.

The Monteverde USA Ink is a joy to write with, and at an extremely attractive price, it’s a great introduction for anyone newly into fountain pens or for anyone who wants to try out Monteverde ink for the first time.

This video shows the Monteverde California Teal and gives you a great idea of what to expect when writing with any ink from this collection.

2. Monteverde Gemstone Ink Collection

The Monteverde Gemstone Collection is a step up in quality and produces some of the most bright and vibrant colors we’ve seen from the company. Taking their inspiration from natural geode formations, the Gemstone collection is a great emulation of the vibrant, sparkling colors found in precious gemstones. The gift set comes in ten colors and is the perfect addition to any aspiring artist’s toolbox.

Gemstone inks are also water-based and have the same fountain pen nib lubricating effects as the base-level ink. Using inks that can help lubricate the fountain pen nib and innards can help extend the life of your pen as it reduces damaging, clog-causing ink buildups. The quality of ink flow with the Gemstone Collection is unmatched by any of the other ink collections from Monteverde.

What we love most about the Gemstone Collection is the sheer brightness and vibrancy of the colors. While most fountain pen ink can run quite thin since they are water-based, the quality of the color and boldness of the lines is not affected.

Drying time can vary based on the paper you’re using, so if you’re using a less porous paper be careful to avoid smudging your writing or drawing. Overall, the quality of the Gemstone Collection ink is unmatched by any other Monteverde product and it’s our clear favorite of the bunch.

Writing and drawing with Gemstone inks are an absolute blast and since ten different colors come in the gift box, we think it’s well worth the higher price tag.

3. Monteverde Noir Ink Collection

The Monteverde Noir Collection is a love letter to dark, moody, and expressive colors. Based on blue/black color combinations, the Noir Collection is for the writer who wants to make a statement.

Similar to the Gemstone Collection, these inks have great ink flow and keep your fountain pen healthy and clog-free. Like Monteverde’s other inks, these are water-based so they aren’t entirely water-resistant inks. That said, unless your letters or drawings get caught in heavy rain you shouldn’t have a problem.

However, if you’re sending a lot of letters, it might be best to look at the Monteverde Document Inks because you never know the kind of weather conditions your envelopes might be exposed to.

Each of the bottles in the Noir gift set is 30ml, which is a great trial size to find your favorite edgy, noir color(s) before committing to buying a larger bottle. We saw no visible feathering when writing with the Noir collection so these are appropriate inks for the majority of settings.

While we love the Gemstone Collection as a whole, the Rose Noir might be our favorite color from any of the Monteverde collections. Rose Noir is sublime – dark, yet still vibrant with hints of sheen. Rose Noir is a regal-looking purple fit for a king. Using Rose Noir with a high-quality, fine nibbed fountain pen is the pinnacle of penmanship, full stop.

This is a unique ink from Monteverde, originally intended as a one-time production which was test-released at the DC Supershow in 2019. It was an instant hit and is now part of the regularly produced lineup.

For the uninitiated, the DC Supershow is a gigantic fountain pen convention held each year in Washington, D.C. It’s a chance for big names in the industry to demo their products, both new and established, to the community.

The DC Supershow Teal is a unique shade of teal that sets it apart from any other teal option from Monteverde or its competitors. Available in a 30 ml bottle, the Supershow Teal is fun, bright, and vibrant. The complete opposite of the Noir Collection.

It’s a great addition to the Monteverde enthusiast’s ink collection, if for no other reason than to own a piece of company history. This ink is so special that it debuted in a crowded field and had the eye-catching beauty and staying power to become a permanent Monteverde resident.

Since this is a single ink bottle, it’s far cheaper than the prior two gift collections. It makes a great pickup with a few other single bottles to round out your collection.

View on Amazon

Compared to the Supershow Teal, the Turtle Turquoise has a more medium color saturation and a well-controlled flow. The bottle design wins the award for most adorable, as do all nine other inks in the Jungle Ink Collection.

Monteverde took inspiration from the colors of nature for the Jungle Ink Collection. They sought to match each ink to the coloration of the real-life animals they represent. The result is a beautiful range of colors that produce beautiful shading on any paper.

The Jungle Ink Collection bottles are only available in the 30ml size so you can purchase one to try. If you’re interested in more than one bottle, it might be best to go for the Jungle Ink Collection gift set – this way you can save money and try the entire collection.

Turtle Turquoise stands out for its beautiful color and color depth. Like every other ink created by Monteverde, Turtle Turquoise has its patented ITF technology so the ink has unmatched ease of flow.

Writing with Turtle Turquoise is fun and somehow conveys a happy, bright feeling. Not as serious and intense as the Noir, or as radical and bold as the Gemstone, Turtle Turquoise is beautiful, fun, and doesn’t take itself too seriously.

The Jungle Collection is a great choice for everyday writing and drawing.

Considerations Before Buying and FAQs

While all Monteverde inks are of superior quality due to the ITF technology, each collection has its own best uses.

Pricing

Each of the inks covered here can be found at an affordable price with the Gemstone and Noir gift boxes being the most expensive. If you’re writing for business or official purposes, a serious artist or a real aficionado of inks, the higher price tag for the Gemstone and Noir collections is well worth it.

If you’re looking for more fun and casual experience you can probably stick with the Jungle Collection or the original inks.

Bottle Size and Availability

Monteverde sells their inks in three different sizes 30, 50, and 90ml. As noted above, the Jungle and Noir collections are only available in 30ml bottles. It can be a little frustrating if you find a specific color you like that you’re forced to order smaller sizes, but unless you’re heavily using your ink, the 30 ml bottles can last quite a while.

If you’re writing often and still exploring the range of colors of Monteverde inks, it’s probably best to try one of the gift sets to narrow down your favorites and then purchase the 90ml bottles of either Gemstone or regular ink collections.

Ink Compatibility With Different Pen Types

While Monteverde inks are beautiful, they’re not suitable for use with every type of luxury pen. If you’re using a fine nibbed fountain pen look no further than Monteverde.

If you prefer a more classical drip-style pen, the ITF technology in the ink will be a hindrance to your pen. The ink will be too watery and run right off your tip before you’re able to put pen to paper. Instead, stick to cartridge-fed fountain pens when considering any of these inks.

FAQs

Answers provided apply to every ink covered in this guide unless specifically noted.

Are these inks water-resistant?

No, while they won’t run when exposed to a little water, these inks wouldn’t be the best choice for postage. On the off chance that your envelopes get wet, these are water-based inks and they don’t have the highest water resistance.

Where is the ink made?

Monteverde inks are made in Austria and then packaged in the United States at their headquarters in California.

Is the ink erasable?

No. While these inks are not marketed as “permanent,” they cannot be erased off the page. Do not rinse with water or attempt to erase them because it will ruin your paper and cause blotches.

Can the inks be mixed to create new colors?

As long as you stick to inks from the same manufacturer so that you know all the inks are of the same base, you can mix them to make new colors. You should mix them in a separate medium so that the original ink containers aren’t contaminated in case you don’t like how the mixture turns out.

The Monteverde Ink Difference

While far younger than their competition, Monteverde has proven themselves to be makers of high-quality ink. With their patented ITF technology their inks are resilient, have a smooth and continuous flow, and have beautiful, vibrant colors.

The flow characteristics of the ink provide a smooth and almost luxurious feel to write with, all while protecting your favorite fountain pen by continuously lubricating the ink-feeding mechanisms. The attractive prices of the ink and availability of gift sets let you easily try up to ten colors at a time.

From their bright and playful Jungle Ink Collection to the regal and serious tones of the Noir Collection, Monteverde has an ink color for everyone.

When you are looking for a new fountain pen, it is important to find the right cartridge to go with it. Cross ink cartridges are some of the most popular on the market, and there are a variety of options available.

In this guide, we will walk you through the different types of Cross ink cartridges available, as well as provide some tips on how to choose the right one for your needs.

So whether you’re a first-time buyer or just looking for some information on Cross cartridges, read on for all the details!

What is an Ink Cartridge?

An ink cartridge is a small, sealed container that holds liquid ink and is used in fountain pens. The cartridge is attached to the nib of the pen, and as you write, the ink flows from the cartridge onto the paper.

There are two main types of cartridges – disposable and refillable. Disposable cartridges can only be used once and then must be thrown away, while refillable cartridges can be refilled with ink multiple times.

Cross offers a wide variety of cartridges to choose from. There are also a variety of color options available, so you can find the perfect match for your exceptional writing style.

Cross Ink Cartridges

These compact ink cartridges for fountain pens are made to fit the Cross Spire’s compact profile. This is a pack of six Cross ink cartridges. These cartridges are the perfect way to keep your pen writing smoothly and deliver consistent ink flow.

This pen ink black cartridge is compatible with the following Cross Fountain pens – Bailey Light, Aventura, Botanica, Bailey, Calais, Beverly, Classic Century, Century II, Townsend, Wanderlust, and Peerless.

Although the Cross fountain pen is effective, the quick ink cartridge might be slightly problematic. You have to use thin or slim ink cartridges because the fountain pen doesn’t have a converter.

This cross ink also appears to bleed a little bit, which causes the everyday writing experience to be hazy and unclear.

Which Ink Color Should You Go For?

Choosing an ink color is a matter of personal preference, and there are a few things to keep in mind. Black and blue are the most popular colors, but there are also blue-black cartridges available.

If you plan on using your pen for work or school, you’ll want to choose a professional-looking color, like black. Blue is a popular choice for personal use, and blue-black is a good option if you want something that’s somewhere in between.

If you’re unsure which color to choose, it’s a good idea to try out a few different options before making a decision. This way, you can see which color you prefer and find the perfect match for your exceptional writing style.

How to Choose the Right Cross Ink Cartridge

When choosing a Cross ink cartridge, there are a few things to keep in mind. These include:

The type of pen you are using: Fountain pens come in various sizes and styles, which is why it is important to check that the cartridge you choose is compatible with your pen. Some use cartridges that are specific to the pen, while others can use any type of cartridge. Knowing what type of pen you have before purchasing a cartridge is important.

The size of the cartridge: Cartridges come in a variety of sizes, from small to large. The standard size you choose will depend on how much ink you need and how often you plan to use your pen.

The type of ink: There are two main types of ink available for cartridges – dye-based and pigment-based. Dye-based inks are less expensive and have a wider range of colors, but they can fade over time. Pigment-based inks are more expensive, but they are more resistant to fading and provide a richer color.

The color of the ink: Inks come in a variety of colors, from black and blue to green and red. The color you choose will depend on your personal preferences and the type of writing you do.

The price: Cartridges range in price from a few dollars to over $100. The price you pay will depend on the factors listed above, as well as the brand you choose with superior writing characteristics.

Your writing style: If you write quickly or exert a lot of pressure when writing, you’ll want to choose a cartridge with a thicker ink reservoir. This will help prevent your pen from running out of ink in the middle of a sentence.

The type of paper you’ll be using: If you plan on using your pen on thin or delicate paper, you’ll want to choose a cartridge with a softer nib. This will help prevent the paper from tearing. Consider the nib size as well.

When it comes to choosing the right Cross ink cartridge, there is no one-size-fits-all answer. The best way to figure out what works for you is to experiment with different types and see what you prefer. With so many options available, you’re sure to find the perfect match for your needs!

FAQs

How long do ink cartridges last?

This answer will depend on a few different factors, such as the type of pen you are using, the size of the cartridge, and the type of ink. Generally speaking, smaller cartridges will need to be replaced more often than larger ones.

While pigment-based inks tend to be more expensive, they also last longer than dye-based inks. So, if you are looking for a long-lasting cartridge, pigment-based is the way to go.

What is the difference between dye-based and pigment-based inks?

Dye-based inks are less expensive and have a wider range of colors, but they can fade over time. Pigment-based inks are more expensive, but they are more resistant to fading and provide a richer color.

So, if you are looking for an ink that will last a long time without fading, pigment-based is the way to go. But if you are looking for a wide range of colors to choose from, dye-based is the better option.

Do I need to use a specific type of cartridge with my Cross pen?

Not necessarily. Some Cross pens use cartridges that are specific to the pen, while others can use any type of cartridge.

It is important to check what type of pen you have before purchasing a cartridge, so you know which one to buy. But if you’re not sure, any type of Cross ink cartridge should work with your pen.

What is the best way to store ink cartridges?

Ideally, you should store ink cartridges in a cool, dry place. This will help prolong their shelf life and prevent them from drying out.

If you are not using your cartridges for an extended period of time, you may want to consider storing them in the refrigerator. Just be sure to bring them back to room temperature before using them again.

How can I get the most out of my ink cartridge?

To get the most out of your ink cartridge, it is important to use it regularly. If you let your cartridge sit for too long without using it, the ink can dry out and clog the pen.

To avoid this, make sure to use your pen on a regular basis. If you are not going to be using it for an extended period of time, be sure to store it properly.

How can I clean my pen if the ink is clogged?

If your pen is starting to write poorly or the ink is not flowing smoothly, it may be time to clean it. The best way to do this is to use a cleaning solution designed specifically for Cross pens.

You can find these solutions at most office supply stores or online. Follow the instructions on the bottle, and be sure to rinse your pen thoroughly afterwards.

How often should I clean my pen?

It is generally recommended that you clean your pen every few months, or whenever it starts to write poorly. But if you use your pen on a daily basis, you may need to clean it more often.

If you notice the ink starting to dry out or clump up, it is definitely time for a cleaning. Even if everything seems to be working fine, it’s never a bad idea to give your pen a good cleaning every once in a while.

Conclusion

So there you have it, our complete guide to buying cross ink cartridges in 2022. We hope that this article has been helpful and provided you with all the information you need to make an informed purchase.

Overall, Cross ink cartridges offer quality performance and many colors from which to choose.

They can be somewhat expensive compared to other brands’ offerings – but if you have a favorite fountain pen brand that uses Cross ink cartridges exclusively (such as Parker or Sheaffer), then purchasing them may be worth it, in order to maintain consistency with your writing instrument.

The Joy in the Ordinary series from Colorverse is available in varying colors and themes – Brunch Date, Coffee Break, Delicious Sleep, Rainy Day, Under the Shade, and Walk the Dog. With delightful, theme-based graphics, the bottles look amazing.

Interestingly, the color of the ink matches the theme shown on the bottle. For instance, the warm brown ink can remind you of a cup of hot coffee. This creative combination of color and theme is one of the attractions of Colorverse ink bottles. But, this is just all about general aesthetics.

We have checked the quality of ink, which determines performance. Colorverse ink has maintained a balance between dry and wet. Once the ink has transferred on to the paper’s surface, it feels semi-dry.

The cute-looking oval-shaped bottles are extremely portable. You can carry a bottle with you to fill your fountain pen anytime.

The best feature is that the Joy in the Ordinary series includes some unconventional colors. Those who prefer something different from blue, red, and black inks can choose these colors.

For instance, the brown shade is not close to black, and your writings on the paper will look attractive. Almost any bottle in this series presents you with soft and muted ink colors.

According to some users, the ink performs well on both high and low-quality papers.

Colorverse has named each bottle in this series with a unique identifying feature from every US State. For instance, in the Cape May bottle, Colorverse likes to remind you of The Jersey Cape, which is a famous destination for its boardwalks and beaches.

Similarly, Dakota Thunder and Rhode Island are other United States themes for the ink bottle. You may choose the ink bottle as a gift for your friend who resides in one of the specific states.

Colorverse has used premium quality, pure colorants to formulate the ink. That is why you will see clear and crisp colors. Made from plant-origin materials, the ink is safe to use.

The alcohol-free ink does not contain any chemical odorants. So, while writing on your paper with your fountain pen, you will not find an unpleasant odor. The pH value is neutral, so the ink will not deteriorate in your fountain pen.

Just like the US Special Series, this line is named after famous constellations. The round bottle size is slightly larger than other ink bottles.

One of the constellation inks is Boo, which represents the brightest star in Bootes. Although it seems to be a pale, dusty pink color, it looks dark when you apply the ink to paper.

Similarly, Colorverse Uma got its name from the most shining star in the Ursa Major. It is a fascinating grey fountain pen ink, which seems to be a pale burgundy at first glance.

You can also choose the Orion constellation pack to get the reddish-orange ink and a beautiful gold sheen.

Guide to Buying the Colorverse Ink for Your Fountain Pens

It is always fun to write something on paper with your fountain pen. The ink is available in a range of qualities, colors, and price rates. This pen ink will need special care to prevent any issues.

Before providing you with a guide for choosing the ink, you have to know the difference between ink bottles and cartridges.

Bottled Ink vs Cartridges – Which Option is Better for You?

While some consumers prefer ink cartridges, others like to use bottled ink. It is easy to make your decision based on your pen design. Several fountain pens do not work with ink cartridges, and thus, you need to choose bottled ink to continue writing.

Both bottled ink and cartridges have advantages and disadvantages.

Cartridges are user-friendly, as you just pop one in the pen and write with it until the ink runs out. Cartridges can be the better choice for those who need to use the pen while traveling. But, one of the biggest downfalls of cartridges is that they are not available in several colors.

On the other hand, bottled Colorverse ink is found in a range of unique colors. The best feature is that even though your pen needs a standard cartridge, you may refill that cartridge with your bottled ink.

That is why an ink bottle is a versatile choice for fountain pen users.

Another notable feature is that popular fountain pen brands rely on proprietary cartridges, which will limit you to a few colors.

Bottled inks are best for beginners and intermediate users who prefer writing their notes using different colors.

Colorverse has also introduced several different colors of ink. Although bottled ink is slightly costlier than cartridges, it usually has a better use case. One of the downfalls is that you have to learn how to fill your pen with ink, without making a mess.

Which Type of Fountain Pen Ink Should You Buy?

The flow of the ink starts from the reservoir of your fountain pen and passes through the nib to reach the paper. The size of your fountain pen nib affects how your ink appears on the paper.

This is the way the ink works inside of your pen. Fountain pen inks come in different types and each has its own varying characteristics.

Dye-based Inks

There are water-soluble chemical components in the dye-based inks, which are used for most fountain pens. For those who are looking for a cheaper option, dye ink is the right choice.

It is easy to care for a fountain pen that uses water-soluble dye inks. These inks do not get easily blocked in your fountain pen. Colorants used for the pen dissolve in water, and thus, they do not leave any sediment.

Another advantageous feature is that you can flush your fountain pen with water.

Because of the solubility of dye inks, they are not waterproof. While writing down notes on a piece of paper, you must avoid water contact to prevent smudging issues.

This low-maintenance dye ink is available in a range of colors, and it looks vibrant while being used for writing purposes.

Pigment-based Inks

The fade-proof and waterproof pigment inks have become popular among fountain pen users. This ink contains fine solid colorant particles that can be combined with water. These colorants are not water-soluble and remain suspended in liquids.

That is why you need to clean your fountain pen regularly. When left untreated, solid particles block the feed of your pen. They also cause a barrier to the smooth flow of the nib.

The water-insoluble nature has some pros, as it makes the ink more permanent. When solid particles touch your paper, they create a bond to the fibers. There is no risk of fading in contact with sunlight. You will not find these advantages with chemical dye inks. Pigment inks are slightly costlier than dye inks.

Iron-gall Inks

The reaction of iron ions and tannic acid results in the formulation of iron-gall inks. The acid used for manufacturing ink is taken out of oak trees’ galls. When you write something on paper using iron-gall ink, it darkes.

You will find a deeper purple-black tone because of the iron oxidation. In wetter spots, the ink looks darker while it dries. Due to this special trait, the ink can cause a shading effect.

Permanence is another big reason for choosing this ink. After oxidation, iron-gall inks turn out to be water-insoluble – insolubility ensures permanence to the ink.

This quality is preferable, especially when you need to issue certificates. Identify your needs before choosing the right type of fountain ink.

One thing to note is that iron-gall inks contain acid, and they are corrosive. You need to choose them for a fountain pen that you use regularly.

The ink left in the metallic pen can result in corrosion.

Bulletproof Ink

The dye-based formula of the bulletproof ink provides you with the benefits of both dye-based and pigment-based inks. This ink has a strong bond with the cellulose fibers in paper, resulting in a waterproof ink. This dye-based formula does not need maintenance.

There is no need to clean the pen and remove the solid particles inside it. You can choose the bulletproof ink to get a long-lasting solution and sharp color. When the pen ink leaves marks on undesirable places, it is not easy to remove the stain.

Shimmer and Sheen Inks

Shimmer and sheen are usually confused together, but they have a clear difference.

Nowadays, consumers prefer fountain pen inks with a high amount of sheen. In fact, sheen refers to a property of your pen ink. It becomes visible when the paper has not absorbed the ink completely.

While the ink takes time to dry naturally on the surface, the sheen becomes prominent. The sheen gives the ink an iridescent effect. For instance, a red ink may have a purple sheen, while the purple one presents you with a golden sheen.

Like sheen, shimmer is one of the ink’s properties. This chemical property is associated with dyes used for the ink. The use of shimmer makes the ink look glittered. For those who prefer sparkling ink, shimmer ink is the ideal choice.

You need the right paper and pen to find the desired output from shimmer ink. While writing on your holiday and greeting cards, this ink is the most suitable option.

Fluorescent Inks

This unique pen ink becomes visible under UV rays. Colorverse has no collection of this ink.

Scented Inks

Colorverse’s line of scented inks is one of the most unique in the market right now. Currently, they offer lavender, rose, jasmine and other flowers. The strong fragrance lasts 1 to 2 days.

Shading Inks

These inks appear darker and lighter at varying points in every stroke. You need an ink-resistant paper for using these inks.

Important Things to Consider

Ink Colors

You can compare different colors of fountain pen ink, in order to pick the right one. The color is all about your preferences. Colorverse offers packs of multiple colored inks. We suggest buying mini swatches to test out which ones you like.

Waterproof

It is not easy to find a fountain pen ink that is 100% waterproof. You may find the ink bottle labeled as waterproof, but improper use of this ink can still cause smearing problems.

It is quite safe to use moderately water-resistant ink to ensure legibility of your paper notes, if it becomes in contact with water.

Saturation Level

Saturation indicates the amount of colorant used for the ink. Vibrant and dark inks are highly saturated. On the contrary, more transparent and paler inks indicate a low saturation level. You can easily identify saturation by checking the ink visually in your writing samples.

One issue with highly saturated ink is that it takes a longer time to dry. The dye residue can get accumulated in the pen’s nib over time. You can solve the performance problem by cleaning the pen’s interior with water.

To get a no-fuss solution, you can choose an ink with low to medium-level saturation.

Wetness or Flow of Your Ink

This indicates how smoothly the ink flows through your pen. Wetter ink will have a faster flow. When you are using a wetter ink, you will naturally go through the ink faster.

For a smoother feeling, you can opt for wet inks. However, dry inks ensure less feathering, and you cannot use them for your average-quality paper.

Match the Paper Quality to the Ink

Choosing fountain pen-friendly papers is important, to ensure better performance of the ink. Due to the ink feed and nib, you will have more ink on your paper.

Regular papers are flimsy and thin. While using a fountain pen, there may be bleeding issues.
Thick waterproof inks will dry slowly, so you must not use them while writing in notebooks. When you close the notebook, the ink will make a mess.

FAQs

How long will my fountain pen ink last?

In an unopened ink bottle, the fountain pen can last 10 to 60 years. This can vary with the ink type and the way you have stored it.

After opening the ink bottle, the life expectancy of the ink starts to deteriorate significantly. That is why you should try to use the ink shortly after you purchase it.

You may use an airtight container to preserve your ink and save it from impurities. The mold growth inside the bottle can make the ink useless. While refiling the pen, you need to make sure that your hands and the pen are clean.

How long does the ink last on a paper?

This is directly related to the ink quality and color. In the case of a low-quality fountain pen ink, contact with water can affect it. The best ink has an unlimited shelf life, and there is no risk of fading. Environmental factors and water will not damage it easily.

Is there any rule about the type of ink to be chosen for the fountain pen?

Although we have not found any rigid rule, it is safe to use traditionally-formulated ink for a new fountain pen. Choose ink that will not damage your pen. You do not need to compromise over color choices.

What is the difference between dry and wet inks?

The most important thing is that the drier inks flow less while the wetter ones flow quickly. Beginners can use moderately wet inks for their regular use. These inks are also safe for any type of fountain pen.

Although drier inks look good, they are not a perfect choice for novices. While writing on paper with drier ink, you will find it slightly scratchy. Some fountain pen users do not prefer this sensation.

Should I shake the ink bottles?

Fountain pen lovers have some disagreement regarding the need for shaking bottles. Some consumers argue that this shaking causes sediment to enter your pen, leading to the fountain pen nib getting clogged.

In some cases, it is important to shake the ink bottle. For instance, shaking is essential when using shimmering inks to disperse the glittering particles evenly. While shaking the bottle, you should make sure that the mouth is properly closed.

How do I decide on the right ink for my fountain pain?

The nib size and ink flow are the most important factors for this purpose. You must also focus on your writing style to make the right decision. The way you use the pen affects the bleed through and feathering.

Heavy-handed writing increases the ink flow of your pen. It may also result in indentations on the paper. To avoid these issues, you have to slow down your speed. Let the paper have more time to soak up the ink.

How can I differentiate fountain pen ink from other ordinary inks?

There are two major ingredients in fountain pen inks – colorants and water. They will also have preservatives and some other ingredients. Inks with other stuff (like shellac) are not intended for a fountain pen. They can damage your pen.

Can I blend one ink with another for a single fountain pen?

This may be a risky step for your pen. The ink has a complicated chemical composition. While there are compatible inks, they can react to produce sediments and gasses. Your pen will most likely get damaged over time.

Education – What to Know More About Aurora Inks

There are many black inks at your disposal in the market. Here’s what makes each type of ink unique.

What’s the difference between the first and second aurora ink?

The first Aurora Black Ink is a bottled ink refill with glitter particles, which means it comes in a bottle and can be used with a variety of pens. The second Aurora Blue-Black Ink is a cartridge you can only use with the Aurora pen.

The first Aurora Black is a quality control ink made for use in fountain pens, brush pens, rollerball pens, and more. A 2ml sample shows it’s water-resistant once it dries and has archival properties, so your writing will last for a long time.

The second Aurora Blue-Black Ink is explicitly made for the Aurora pen. This means that it can be used on all types of paper without bleeding through or feathering. Its sample vial also has archival properties, so your writing will last as long as possible.

What are common differentiators between the first and second aurora inks?

Aurora Black Bottled Ink and Aurora Blue Black Ink are popular quality control inks used by artists and people who love drawing and painting. They provide a stunning color palette, but which one is the best?

First: They come in different bottle sizes. The Aurora Blue Black Ink comes in a 3 oz bottle, while the Aurora Black Bottled Ink comes in a 4 oz bottle. If you’re looking for more ink at a lower cost, you should go with the Aurora Blue Black Ink. If you need more detail and volume when drawing or painting, you should go with the Aurora Black Bottled Ink instead.

Second: They differ in their ink density levels, meaning they will spread differently on paper when using them. And how much pressure needs to be applied when using them. They have different viscosity levels due to their density levels and different finely-ground solid particles.

3 Things to Look for (Common Complaints or Features the Aurora Inks Have)

Before you purchase an Aurora black ink refill or bottle, it’s essential to know what to look for in these products. Some common complaints include:

The ink doesn’t come out correctly on some papers like copier papers or when it’s used with a certain type of fountain pen

The ink leaks out too fast or too slow

The Aurora bottled nips don’t fit into your mechanical pencil correctly

Tips for how to use or make the most out of the aurora inks

Look no further if you’re looking for the best Aurora Black ink. We’ve done the research for you and narrowed it down to two choices. Now that you have your choice of bottles, there are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind when using aurora inks:

Use them in your fountain pen like the Aurora Europa fountain pen – limited edition or another device that can use ink cartridges or refills! Just make sure you read the instructions on how to insert them into your pen.

If you want to ensure that your ink lasts as long as possible, store it in a cool place. Ensure it’s where there isn’t much light exposure. You don’t want it to get old before its time!

Shake before you use it. You’ll want to shake your bottle of aurora ink before each use. If you don’t, it will appear blotchy or uneven on your page.

Use a drop of water to mix with your replacement nib unit. If you want your nibs to last longer between refills, then mix them with a drop.

If you need help with any part of this process or have questions, post in the chat box for your query to be sorted.

Prerequisites for using the product

When you’re looking to buy Aurora Black Ink, it can be confusing to determine which one is best for your needs. Many factors make up an exemplary ink cartridge, but we’ve narrowed it down to two: color and price.

Color: Aurora has plenty of different ink colors available, including blue and black. The color options range from standard colors like black or blue to more exotic colors like brown sheen, green or purple. You can also find specialty inks such as metallic or shimmery shades that look great on cards or scrapbooking pages.

Price: No matter what kind of budget you have, you should get an Aurora bottled Black Ink cartridge that fits into your budget without breaking the bank! Go for a regular price to cater for your needs.

Herbin Ink has dominated the world of color and art since they first started producing products in the 18th century. The quality has steadily improved with time, and they have managed to create a huge variety of reliable inks. Here’s a complete overview of all of them.

What Is Herbin Ink?

Herbin Ink is the masterpiece of Jacques Herbin, a 4th-gen French sailor who set out on a boat and made multiple voyages to different countries around the world.

The Herbin family started by manufacturing sealing wax from ingredients collected during their voyages to India.

Soon, Herbin was selling imported shellac and fine stationery along with sealing wax. In 1798, Jacques got involved in the ink trade and started the business that now boasts multiple awards for quality and produces all-natural inks.

Herbin Ink is one of the oldest ink makers in the world, and they continue to produce high-quality, au naturale inks today.

The Jacques Herbin 1798 Inks

Celebrating the birth of Herbin Ink, the Jacques Herbin 1798 ink collection is characterized by a deep color palette that shines with flecks of silver for a premium finish.

Kyanite du Népal Ink

Named after a noble mineral of Nepal, the Kyanite du Népal ink by Herbin is a deep blue almost turquoise shade that shines with tiny bits of silver. It works well with broad and fine nibs, flows well, and has considerable shine.

Cornaline d’Egypte Ink

Dedicated to an Egyptian gemstone that symbolizes a stress-free life, the Cornaline d’Egypte ink by Herbin is a bright orange toned down with flecks of silver. It embodies the essence of fall and has great shading.

Amethyste De L’Oural Ink

Titled after the majestic Ural mountain, the Amethyste De L’Oural ink by Herbin is a deep purple that shimmers with silver. It is a wetter ink that has a great shading contrast and flows well but does not work on copy paper.

The 1670 Collection of Herbin Inks

The 1670 Collection was designed to mark the adventures of Herbin and celebrate his passion for dyes and art.

Caroube de Chypre

Named after the carob trees in Cyprus (a favorite of Herbin on his voyages), the Caroube de Chypre ink is a dark brown color with a gold shimmer. It is highly saturated, meaning it takes a second or two to dry. Also, it shades well on smooth paper.

Emeraude de Chivor

Dedicated to the emerald that Herbin believed represented good luck, the Emeraude de Chivor ink is an emerald-green color that shines with flecks of gold to commemorate royalty. It is the perfect choice for invitations. It shades well but does not offer a lot of shine.

Stormy Gray

Labeled after Herbin’s voyages on stormy seas, the Stormy Gray ink is a deep coal gray that has a bit of gold sheen added. Since gray and gold don’t make for a well-rounded match, the shimmer is toned down, and unless the bottle is vigorously shaken before using, the gold won’t show. It is on the drier side.

Bleu Ocean

Commemorating the famous Indigo dye of India, the Bleu Ocean ink by Herbin is a deep blue that shimmers with flecks of gold. It has a great sheen on paper, dries incredibly fast, and can be used on copy paper as well, not to mention it wipes off as easily as water.

Rouge Hematite

Made on the 340th anniversary of Herbin Ink, the Rouge Hematite boasts the color of standard sealing wax, meaning it has a deep earthy red with flecks of gold. It does take a second to dry, which also means it bleeds on low-quality paper, but overall, it shades well and glides smoothly.

An Overview of All Herbin Fountain Pen Inks

A recent addition to Herbin Ink, the fountain pen inks were curated as an ode to their au naturale inks in the 1700s. They have a neutral pH level, which works well with all fountain pens.

The Jewel of Inks

Labeled after famous gemstones, the Jewel of Inks is a collection of 35 water-based inks that flow well, have a high shading contrast, and clean with a single wipe. Also, they are bleed and leak-proof. They are the perfect choice for beginners using quill pens.

The Subtle Inks

Also known as Herbin Ink’s scented ink collection, the Subtle Inks are a collection of six non-pigmented inks that are scented with all-natural fragrances that last up to a week or more — perfect for love letters and pen mail. The ink isn’t saturated, and its au naturale roots do cause it to fade over time.

A Review of Every Calligraphy and Specialty Inks

To meet the artist’s demands, Herbin Ink produced a special line of calligraphy and specialty inks that boast character and color.

Authentic Ink

Also known as ‘lawyer’s ink’, the Authentic Ink by Herbin is a rich black that defines sophistication. It is on the wetter side and may be runny on thin paper, but it does not leak through and is perfect for signatures and certificates.

India Ink

Also termed as ‘China ink’, the India ink by Herbin is a shellac-like black. It is on the drier side and therefore works well on copy paper. It washes off easily and dries on paper fast too. It is one of the standard choices for professional academic use.

Pigmented Ink

One of the most saturated inks by Herbin, the Pigmented ink is an opaque dye available in gold, silver, white, and copper. It is a bit runny but works well on all kinds of paper and elegantly drafts wide strokes with no unnecessary ink blots. When shaken vigorously, the metallic sheen powers through on the paper.

Calligraphy Ink

Available in eight different colors, the Calligraphy Ink by Herbin is made of natural resins that give it a thicker consistency with great flow. This means that the pen nib doesn’t get stained, and the paper is saturated with rich opaque colors. It cleans with a single wipe of a damp paper towel.

Phosphorescent Ink

One of the most innovative additions to the Herbin ink line, the phosphorescent ink is characterized by its ability to glow in the dark. It doesn’t have a pigment but glows green in color and may be clumpy unless vigorously shaken.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Herbin ink wet?

Herbin inks tend to be on the drier side, which means they are bleed and leak-proof. This also means they work well with all types of paper, including standard copy paper.

Are Herbin inks dry?

Yes, Herbin inks are dry but have an easy flow. They don’t transfer to the other side of the canvas and are reliable for all kinds of paper. They can be thickened by adding a little gum arabic.

Final Thoughts

Herbin Ink is quite famous for its wide range of colorful and reliable inks. After reading through the entire overview, we hope you’ve been able to find an ink that works perfectly for you.

Ink is an old drawing, writing, and painting medium that has been used by many cultures across the world. It is perfect for artists, illustrators, and calligraphers alike because of its silky liquid consistency.

Fountain pens are a 19th-century invention that is typically considered collectibles. They’re back in style and available in a variety of colors.

They have a steel nib and a barrel that puts ink to the paper via a capillary mechanism. Since it is simple to draw the color from the reservoir, you can change colors as often as you desire.

The ideal fountain pen ink may make a huge difference in handwriting quality.

How To Choose The Best Fountain Pen Ink?

There’s a lot to think about when choosing fountain pen ink. One decision you’ll have to make is which ink to use.

It is available in both cartridge and bottled, each with its own set of benefits and drawbacks. You should also evaluate which brand is the best and how to prevent purchasing the incorrect type.

There are many inks available from numerous companies, so there is likely to be a color already created to fit everyone’s preference.

Many brands have distinct properties and characteristics, such as flow, dry time, saturation, smoothness, and the capacity to shade.

Buying Guide For The Best Fountain Pen Ink

Choice of Pen

Fountain pen inks come in a variety of sizes, both short and long standard measurements.

It is important to learn what size the pen can handle. Remember to check the ink quality. The ideal ink should be non-acidic and neutral. Non-toxic ink lowers pen tear and wear.

Shading of Ink

Shading is the appearance of ink that is deeper in some spots and less in others. Ink gathers around the start and the end of words. The result is a great variation in color from word to word.

The paper and pen play an important part in shading. Smoother paper enables more shading because the ink has more time to mix into high and low concentration regions when it dries.

Writing Style And Color

The bleeds and feathering that you will have to cope with are determined by the writing style.

Keep in mind the ink color that you require. Some packages contain a mix of blue and black cartridges, while others contain only one color.

In general, heavier-handed writing exerts greater pressure and increases the flow rate. It might lead the ink to flow in places where it would not be required.

Writing too slowly may cause the same issue because it allows the ink to sink into the paper longer. You can find cartridges that are specifically intended to solve these issues.

Cartridges Per Pack

Each pack has a unique number of cartridges. Of course, large value packs are an ideal buy. After all, everyone wants to save money, even if it’s just a considerable sum.

Discount packs are frequently sold in bundles of up to 25 cartridges, which is ideal for a group of people who often use fountain pens.

Paper Quality

Experts highlight the significance of choosing a fountain pen with the proper nib. Even if you pick the ideal nib for a pen, you should consider the ink or cartridge that will be used.

Having these two characteristics reduces smudges and bleed-through while writing on various paper types. Pick an ink type with a quick-drying and smooth consistency.

Conclusion

Fountain pen ink must be mild. It’s commonly a mix of color and water, plus a few more additives to help it flow properly. Although its components are essentially identical, slight differences might cause it to act differently.

Many people like testing different fountain pen inks and observing how they behave on any type of paper and in different pens.

Contrary to expectations, a fountain pen does not need the use of the best paper available. Choosing the ideal pen nib and cartridges guarantees that you have the best experience, whatever is the paper you are using.

Fountain pen inks are available in every color you can think of, so you can easily find a shade that suits your needs. Start with brands like Herbin and Waterman, which provide a wider range of colors.

We have listed the best fountain pen inks that will help you write smoothly with little bleed. To make the best decision, you should know your requirements and follow your taste.

Fountain pens and calligraphy pens are both elegant writing tools, but they both have many differences including their inks. If you don’t use the right kind of ink, you run the risk of damaging your pens.

In this article, we compare fountain pen vs calligraphy pen inks to find out their similarities, differences, and use.

Fountain Pen Inks

Fountain pen ink is a fluid that’s made up of colored dye dissolved to make one consistent solution. Since inks in fountain pens are stored in a reservoir, the dye in fountain pen inks is completely reduced to the molecular level to prevent it from clogging up the tip.

If you try to use this ink with a calligraphy pen, it would make quite a mess on the writing piece of paper. This is because the ink is too light and thin and would immediately fall off the dip nib as soon as it touches the page.

Fountain pens have an ink reservoir that needs to be replenished once it runs out. With fountain pens, there are two options of inks to choose from — cartridge or bottle inks. Some fountain pens use only one of the two options, which makes the process of choosing easier.

Cartridges

Cartridges are quite easy to use. All you have to do is pop one into your pen, write until it runs out, and replace it. Most people who choose cartridges over bottle inks do so for convenience.

Many fountain pens use a standard design for their cartridges called the standard international style. Fountain pens with this standard cartridge design give you a wider range of color selection than other cartridge-filled pens.

The biggest con of cartridge inks is that, when compared to bottled ink, they have a fewer selection of colors. Even standard international cartridges have only a tenth of the color choices compared to bottled inks.

Cartridges also run out quickly because they don’t contain as much ink as bottled inks. Although they’re cheaper, in the long run, they’re not economical and would cost you a lot of money, especially if you write a lot.

Bottled Inks

Bottled inks are ideal for users who want more choices of colors to explore. They also have specialized options like fraud-resistant and waterproof inks, which is something you’d be hardpressed to find with cartridges.

One bottled ink may cost more than an entire pack of ink cartridges, but in the long run, will save you a lot of money because they last longer.

The downside of refilling your fountain pen with a bottle of ink is that the process is a little more complicated. They’re also stressful to transport if you have to take your pens on a trip.

Cartridge Inks Vs Bottled Inks

Advantages – Cartridges

Low initial cost

Easy to remove and reinstall

No extra parts needed

Disadvantages – Cartridges

More expensive in the long run

Limited color choices

No waterproof option

Advantages – Bottled Ink

Wide variety of colors

Waterproof and fraud-proof options

Lower long-term costs

Disadvantages – Bottled Ink

Higher entry cost

May need extra parts like a separate converter

More complicated refill process

Inconvenient for travel

Calligraphy Pen Inks

Most calligraphy pens have a metal nib and a nib holder that is dipped in an inkwell or ink bottle to write. These dip pens don’t have any internal reservoir for ink.

Unlike most fountain pen inks, calligraphy inks are usually pigmented. This means they’re made with finely ground solid, paint-like matter mixed with fluids. Also, unlike dissolved dyes, these pigments do not fully dissolve and have particles that will settle over time.

Before use, the containers have to be shaken to mix the contents up again. Some calligraphy inks (e.g. India ink) have thickening agents like Arabic gum or undissolved particles that may clog up a fountain pen over time.

Fountain Pen Vs Calligraphy Pen Ink

Both types of writing inks have their strong suits and preferred use.

Solution

Fountain pen inks are water-soluble dyes that completely dissolve to be lightly viscose while calligraphy inks are pigments diluted to have high viscosity. The pigments never fully dissolve in the mixture, leaving behind particles that may clog up a calligraphy nib if not washed regularly.

Viscosity

High ink viscosity is required in calligraphy dip pens to keep the ink on the surface of the nib. Otherwise, it would all run off on the page. Some calligraphy inks also have thickening agents to promote viscosity.

Because writing with calligraphy pens is all about control and flexibility, the ink does not hinder you. Viscosity also gives you better control over the flow of ink, especially when you’re experimenting with line variations.

Color Ranges

Fountain pen inks have a wider variety of colors than calligraphy inks, especially bottled inks. Options also include shimmer and scented inks to add texture and dimension to your writing project.

Uses

While using calligraphy ink for a fountain pen may lead to clogging up, a fountain pen ink for a calligraphy pen will cause the flow of ink to create a mess.

How To Store Your Writing Ink Bottles

A writing ink will last as long as the ink remains so long as you keep it out of direct sunlight and store it properly. Here are some tips to help you store your writing ink supplies well:

Store in Airtight Containers

Use airtight containers, preferably ones with screw top lids. Screw-top lids are better than lids that have to be pried off because they’re easier to open and make less mess.

Use Glass Bottles for Storage

Plastic is porous but glass isn’t, so bottles made with glass are better for ink storage than plastic.

When ink is stored in plastic bottles, the water inside begins to slowly evaporate and dry out, leaving behind only the dyes and pigments. In some cases, dried-out ink bottles can be reused by diluting them with some water, though you may end up clogging your pen feed.

Keep Out of UV Light

Direct sunlight is a very good source of UV rays — apart from changing the color of your ink, it also heats it. Over time, exposure to UV Light ruins the quality of your ink and changes its color.

Store your ink away from direct sunlight and other artificial lights that may contain UV rays. The original cardboard boxes are a good place to keep the inks. Alternatively, you can dedicate a special drawer for your ink bottles.

Use Your Ink Hygienically

The most common cause of ink spoilage is contamination. The most common culprits of ink contamination are slime and mold. Once you notice a bad smell or slimy appearance in your ink, discard it.

One way these contaminants get into the ink bottle is by putting your dirty pen (with an accumulation of bacteria) directly in the bottle. To avoid this, disinfect your pen before refilling.

Consider flushing out your ink feed by pulling and pushing in some tap water or distilled water. You can use a bulb syringe or converter for this. After flushing, you can now dip the pen inside the well.

All of these storage tips also apply to ink cartridges as well, and because most of them come in plastic bottles, the risk of evaporation is very high. You can prevent this by storing them in airtight Ziploc bags.

How to Hygienically Refill Your Fountain Pen Inks

To get the most out of your ink bottles and extend their shelf life, it is important to refill your pens hygienically. Here are the steps you can take to minimize the risk of contamination when refilling your pens.

Be sure to disinfect your needle before using it

Draw about 1 ml of ink into the syringe

Once done, close the ink bottle as fast as you can

Inject the ink directly into the converter

Prime your fountain pen nib

Clean the used syringe and store it well for the next use

How to Remove and Store Ink Cartridges

To remove and change cartridge inks, you need your fountain pen, paper towel, and running water.

First, completely disassemble the pen’s body to expose the cartridge inside

Carefully take out the ink cartridge with the pen nib facing upward

If you want to reuse the cartridge, you can keep it by sealing the open end with some tape or pouring out the remaining ink into an ink bottle

Clean out the fountain pen by thoroughly flushing it with cool, running water

Once done, cover the metal nib with a paper towel (not cloth or tissue, so it doesn’t leave any lint behind)

Shake the pen to remove any excess liquid

Flush the pen again until the running water is clear, shake again, and leave the pen out to dry

Once dry, you can replace the ink cartridge and re-assemble the pen

Final Thoughts

Exploring the very broad world of artistic writing using fountain pens and calligraphy pens can be a great adventure. To avoid costly mistakes, you should know how to tell the differences between a fountain pen vs calligraphy pen.

What works for a fountain pen may not always work for a calligraphy pen — case in point, the kinds of inks used and their storage methods. When you find ink that works best for the kind of pen you’ve chosen, it automatically transforms what could have been a herculean task into an indulgent fantasy.

Contrary to popular belief, fountain pen enthusiasts are not the only people who adore fountain pens. People have relied on these writing instruments for the best writing experiences for the longest time. One thing that makes these tools so special is fountain pen ink.

But if you’re not using your fountain pen every day, it can take some time to go through a bottle of ink. This leads to the question, does fountain pen ink go bad?

One of the major perks of using regular or antique fountain pens is that you can refill your pen from a bottle of ink once you’ve run out. But knowing what to expect from the different brands of ink is vital if you want to make the best choice.

Here, we’ll be taking a long look at some of the most asked questions in the fountain pen community and forum threads.

Keep reading to learn more about the life of fountain pen inks.

Does Fountain Pen Ink Go Bad?

The community of fountain pen users is increasing every day because there are several perks to using these particular writing instruments.

As more people continue to use fountain pens regularly, it’s important to understand that there are many different brands of ink. With so many types of bottles of ink to choose from, it can be difficult to know which ones have the performance characteristics you’re looking for.

When you purchase a 50ml ink bottle or 60ml bottle of ink, there’s a high chance it will last you for several years at the least. However, how long a single bottle lasts, depends on several variables.

Two of the most important ones are:

The Quality of the Ink

The chemical composition of the ink in question can play a major part in how long it lasts. Higher quality inks tend to have better flow characteristics and anti-bacterial chemicals mixed into them.

This ensures they stay in good working condition for longer periods of time and prevents you from having any bad experiences with your ink bottles.

The Condition of the Bottles of Ink

Another equally important factor that plays a part in how fast ink can go bad is the condition of the ink bottle itself.

Even if the ink isn’t super high quality, it’ll remain in good condition for a long time if left in an unopened bottle.

Because the bottle is sealed, you won’t have to deal with any issues like mold growth or mold spores. This significantly reduces the risk of the rancid ink smell and drying out.

The Shelf Life of Fountain Pen Ink

As we mentioned earlier, the chemical composition and makeup of the ink in a single bottle significantly affects how long ink can last in your fountain pen cartridge.

But typically, even if you aren’t using Winsor & Newton Vintage inks, your ink bottle should still last you at least five years. The chances of getting a longer shelf life increase drastically if it’s an unopened ink bottle.

Archival quality ink deteriorates considerably once its temperature water evaporates.

Another common cause of problems with your ink bottle is contamination that can lead to an adverse chemical reaction. This is a major problem because the ingredients in ink make it fertile ground for mold growth.

Oonce mold spores develop, the rancid smell of ink won’t be far behind.

Outside these problems, only getting a bad batch of fountain pen ink will limit the longevity of your ink.

Clear Signs That Your Fountain Pen Ink Has Gone Bad

It isn’t until you reach for the ink bottle during filling that you can tell if its contents have gone bad. So the next thing you need to know now is how to determine if your pen ink is still viable.

Here are three ways to determine if you have bad ink on your hands:

If the ink lacks any visible flow characteristics and has developed dry patches.

If the ink has visible signs of mold growth.

If the ink smells bad.

If you notice any or all of these signs in your ink bottle, you should not add any of it to your beloved vintage fountain pens.

Ways to Ensure Your Fountain Pen Ink Lasts Longer

Considering how important fountain pen ink is to your writing style and overall writing experience, you need to do all you can to preserve it.

The first thing you need to do is make sure that you only buy reputable ink brands. As a serious fountain pen user, you should avoid small boutique ink makers as quality control is always a major issue with their products.

After purchasing good, archival quality ink, the next thing you need to do is store it properly

Make sure you keep the ink in a well-sealed bottle made of glass. Since you’ll need to block out as much sunlight as possible, make sure you get a glass with a very dark color.

Also, when storing the sealed ink reservoir bottle. Ensure you keep it in a relatively cool room. This will limit its exposure to sunlight and mold growth.

Finally, if you dip the same pen in different inks, make sure you wipe down the pen thoroughly before each refill. Doing this will prevent cross-contamination of the ink bottles.

Bottom Line

Does fountain pen ink go bad?

Yes, it does, and the ingredients it’s made of have considerable sway over how fast this occurs.

But if the ink is high-quality and stored properly, it will likely last you a very long time.

As long as you know how to properly store your ink bottles, all you need to do is make sure you prepare enough space on your shelf to add as many bottles as you want.

When using a cartridge converter style pen, you want to experience luxury and a bit of class every time you write. For the most part, that is usually the case. But regardless of the type of cartridge you use, you’re bound to experience dryness at some point. This is when it pays to know how to fix a dry ink cartridge.

Even if you’re the type of writer that likes to keep extra cartridges at hand, having to dispose of a faulty ink cartridge each time you spot one can quickly become a costly issue.

Knowing how to repair a dry ink cartridge can be a major gamechanger.

By the time you’re through reading this guide, you’ll not only know how to fix dry ink cartridges like a seasoned expert, but you’ll also be able to get more out of your expensive ink cartridges.

How to Fix a Dry Ink Cartridge

Before trying any of the tactics we’ll be discussing here, you need to check a few things first. This is especially important as it’ll ultimately determine how effective the solutions will be.

Some things you need to establish first are that:

1. You’re Not Dealing With Expired Cartridges

Blockage issues resulting from expired cartridges are a fairly common problem. What’s worse, there isn’t anything you can do about it.

The best way to deal with this type of cartridge problem is to make sure that you check the expiration date of the black cartridge or colored ink cartridge when you purchase it. That way, you can keep track of how long your inks will last.

It would also be best to avoid cheap cartridges and cheap ink refill cartridges. A lower-quality fountain pen cartridge will dry out significantly faster, even if it’s at a constant temperature.

However, we should mention that your chances of fixing a cheap, dried-out cartridge are still quite high if you follow our tips.

2. You’re Using Compatible Cartridges

Not using compatible cartridges with your fountain pen can also simulate the same results you’d see if you were using a dry cartridge.

Make sure that the black ink cartridge or colored cartridge you’re using for your writing tool is actually the right fit before you try any fixing or cleaning solution.

3. You Understand the Risks

You must understand that fixing any ink cartridge problem on your fountain pen comes with the possibility of damaging the pen if you aren’t careful.

Because these writing instruments are fragile, you must take extra care when attempting even common troubleshooting solutions.

It’s also important to note that just knowing how to fix a dry ink cartridge isn’t enough. Make sure you’re ready to devote the necessary level of attention and care to deal with the restoration process.

Here are two effective ways you can deal with a dry cartridge problem.

Method One – By Applying Pressure to the Dry Ink Cartridge

One of the most efficient ways to deal with a dried-out ink cartridge is to apply gentle yet firm pressure to it.

This works because, in some cases, it’s just the ink at the opening of the cartridge that has dried out. It’s a scenario most commonly seen when ink cartridges aren’t refilled properly.

So by applying pressure to the ink cartridges, you can encourage the ink to start flowing smoothly again.

You can use this particular solution by loosening the pen grip and then applying light pressure with your fingertips to the far end of the faulty ink cartridge. Keep in mind that this process may vary slightly depending on the form of ink cartridge in question.

By doing so, you’re pushing ink into the feed of the cartridge.

Method Two – By Flushing the Entire System

Sometimes, the drying process takes out not just the cartridge but also the cartridge converter-style fountain pen itself. In cases like this, you employ the approach we’re about to highlight as it’s considerably more comprehensive and eliminates several other blockage issues, as well.

To use this method effectively, some supplies you need include a sink faucet, a cup of warm water or hot water, a sheet of paper towel, a dry lint-free cloth, or some cotton bud/cotton cloth.

Start by removing the cap and disassembling the pen body. After this, remove the dry cartridge from the fountain pen.

Once done, proceed to run water through the back of the pen’s grip section. Do this until the water runs clear through the grip section and out the nib.

After this, you can immerse the grip section in a cup of hot or warm water.

Then, use a bit of paper towel, dry lint-free cloth, or some cotton bud/cotton cloth to carefully wick out any excess water trapped in the pen’s nib. If you discover spots of ink while doing this, repeat the process of running water through the grip section.

Next, you’ll have to repeat the process of filling and then flushing water through the cartridge converter until it runs clear.

You can use the cotton cloth or sheet of paper towel to wipe any excess water from the exterior of the cartridge. Then, set aside the damp cloth or towel and wait for the cartridge to dry completely inside and out.

Once that’s done, refill it with ink, piece your pen back together, and it’ll be as good as new.

Bottom Line

As you can see, being the owner of a fountain pen comes with a lot of responsibility. In addition to knowing how to fix dry ink cartridge problems, you also need to learn a number of other things in order to maintain your pen properly and keep it in working condition. Luckily, this is one of the best places to get started.

Fountain pen calligraphy is an early form of writing that has now become more of a culture. The fountain pen can be described as the later version of the dip pen. The dip pen is an old writing tool that consisted of a nib, capillary channels, and a holder or case.

A fountain pen is very similar to a dip pen, with the major difference being the ink reservoir. The ink itself is another important component that defines the fountain pen. This is why fountain pen ink storage is so important.

In this article, we’ll cover different fountain pen ink storage methods, ways you can extend the shelf life of your ink, and some reasons your ink goes bad.

Storing Fountain Pen Ink

Fountain pen ink is made of dye, water, and other pigments. There are different brands and types of ink, and their compositions vary slightly.

We’ve compiled a list of all the best tips and tricks for storing fountain pen ink. Read more below!

Ensure the Cap Is Screwed On Tight

The first step seems very obvious, but it is one of the major reasons why most people’s ink gets spoiled. It is surprising how easy it is to forget to close the cap of your ink instead of just placing the cap over the ink and not screwing it shut.

The ink is made from dye and some other pigments that are air sensitive. It is okay for you to leave your fountain pen ink slightly exposed when you’re using it. However, if you plan to store the ink for an extended period of time, you need to ensure it is shut tight.

Leaving your ink exposed to the air will cause the ink to start drying and eventually clump up.

Protect Your Ink From UV Light

Some of the components that make up fountain pen ink are light-sensitive, and they tend to change color when exposed to UV light for a while.

You don’t need to hide your ink from light when you’re actively writing because it will take longer than that to alter the color of your ink. However, if you want to store your ink, don’t leave it near a window or someplace where sunlight can get to it (sunlight is a major source of UV light).

If you want to keep some ink at hand and also store some for later, you can arrange all your ink in a box and leave the ones you’re using close to the front.

Another thing to note is that sunlight is not the only source of UV light. A regular electric light source also emits UV light. It is safer to store your ink in a box or cartoon that doesn’t allow light to penetrate.

Store in a Glass Container

Most times, our first instinct is to store our ink or paint in a plastic container. However, storing your fountain pen ink in a plastic container is not a good idea. In the structural formation of glass and plastic, glass particles are more tightly packed compared to plastic.

This means that plastic is more porous in comparison to glass. Keep in mind that water is one of the main components of the ink, and water tends to escape from porous vessels. Keeping your ink in plastic bottles for extended periods of time can result in your ink drying out.

You can avoid drying by leaving your fountain pen ink in a glass jar or container.

Be Neat With Your Pen and Ink

Contamination is a big reason why ink goes bad. Some of the ingredients used in making fountain pen ink are suitable for the growth of microorganisms. You can easily transfer microorganisms from your hand into your ink bottle.

This is one of the reasons why we emphasize regular cleaning of your pen and nibs. Germs can accumulate at the nib and neck of your fountain pen, and these germs can get into your ink bottle when you dip the nib in for a refill.

Ensure that you clean your nib with disinfectants after writing, and also ensure that you brush out ink clogs with a toothbrush.

Now that you’ve read about our preferred methods of fountain pen ink storage, you should have no problem keeping your ink safe. These methods work for both ink bottles and ink cartridges.

Reasons Why Ink Goes Bad

We mentioned a few reasons in this article’s section about ink storage that explain why ink goes bad. Let’s review them again in more detail.

Exposure to UV Light

UV light causes a reaction to occur in the ink which results in it changing color. If you’ve been observing this in ink, then try changing the location you store your ink.

Place your ink in a dark place, and you’ll see that the color change will stop.

Water Loss

Your fountain pen ink is in liquid form because of the water content present. However, if the water is lost, you’ll end up with a dried pigment. This is why we advise you to store your ink in a glass container instead of a plastic one.

Contamination

The growth of microorganisms in your ink can result in the ink developing molds and clogs.

You can avoid this by simply being neat when using your fountain pen and ink container.

Exposure to Air

Leaving your ink jar exposed to the air will make it dry up and start forming clogs as a result of loss of water content.

Conclusion

Ink is an essential part of fountain pen calligraphy, and it needs to be cared for accordingly. You can store your ink for decades if done properly.

We’ve given you some fountain pen ink storage methods as well as some reasons as to why your ink goes bad. Follow our instructions and storing your fountain pen ink will be a breeze.
